Winter Working Party - Planking
You are volunteering to be replacing the decking of the staging. You should be happy at least handling planks (with 2 people) and using a bolt cutter to trim nails.
Please take time to carefully read the Working Parties Risk Assessment and Manual pile driver SOP here on the ISC website and the Working Party FAQs below
We are organising this year differently so that those who have not come before can do with confidence working with experienced team leaders, as each day is focused on one main stage of the process. We are having a big day to strip the planking and another two days to replace it with teams of 6 people primarily from specific classes. In addition, there are 6 piling days, three bearer mounting days, and, if the weather is kind to us and this works to schedule, a general day of catch up and tidying up. Thank you to those of you who have already committed to help and we now have these remaining slots to fill - see below.
Planking: You will be part of a team 4 -6 people who lever up planks and nails, cut off nails remaining in planks with small bolt cutters and stack planks on decking.
Mounting bearers: In teams of 3 you will fit the new bearers so move new bearers, secure under top support, clap to pile, drill and bolt, plus join to adjacent bearer using the sandwich approach. These days will be led by two team leaders.
Re-planking. You will be part of a team of 4-6 who move new planks, space in position, drill and nail them, along with some connecting ramp assembly.
If you would like to become part of the piling team, please contact Charles Hindson (Hon Bosun) directly as we have a limited number of midweek slots to fill on the piling programme in late November working with an experienced person.
Those of you coming to the bearer and piler days should be happy with handling the heavier material including bearers as one of two or three people and using the power tools. Those on the planking days should be happy handling a plank with one other person and handling either at least bolt cutters for stripping or hand drills for fixing new planks.
These working parties are is open to those aged 16 to 18 who must have a parent volunteering for the same working party.
The club greatly appreciates if you come as a volunteer, which two thirds of people have done for the last two years, though there is the option for you to come as a club duty of your own or a family member.
Please be prompt for the briefing, ready to start work. Refreshments including lunch and tea will be provided.
If you are unable to participate in a working party but would still like to contribute to the club's development, please consider donating to the Club's Development Fund.
