MIRROR TRAINING NEWS SEPTEMBER 2014
Posted 15th September 2014
There are opportunities for Itchenor Mirrors to participate in three different Mirror Squads this Winter. See below for a brief description of the different squads and for details on how to apply.
RYA NATIONAL JUNIOR SQUAD
This Squad is run by the RYA and is part of its pathway programme. To be selected for this Squad, you have to apply via the RYA website and attend two selection events as follows:
27/28 September Weymouth; and
11/12 October Northampton.
If you are selected for the Squad, you will then be expected to attend training sessions as follows:
25–29 October Carsington
14/15 March Carsington
28/29 March Rutland
11/12 April Oxford
25/26 April Poole
Apply here: http://www.sailracer.org/events/event-v2.asp?eventid=45078
Find information on the RYA Squad system here: http://www.rya.org.uk/racing/youthjunior/squads/junior/Pages/default.aspx
MCA SUPPORTED DEVELOPMENT SQUAD - SOUTH
This Squad is to replace the previous National Youth Development Squad and South Zone Squad. It will be primarily based at Itchenor but there will be a couple of events further afield. It is supported by the Mirror Class Association.
The first selector event for this squad was at the Itchenor Open but if you missed this, there is a second selector event at Weymouth 27/28 September which you can still attend.
This squad will be an excellent opportunity for those boats who have good boat handling skills and have gained some experience racing and are ready to improve those skills.
If selected for this Squad, the dates for the training are as follows:
2 November RYA Land Day, Weymouth
22/23 November Itchenor
13/14 December Itchenor
24/25 January Itchenor
14/15 February Itchenor
14/15 March Carsington with the National Junior Squad
7/8 April Poole
Apply for the South Squad via the RYA website: http://www.sailracer.org/events/event-v2.asp?eventid=45078
For more information on the South Squad, contact Bruce Grant, MCA rep (South).
For 2014/2015, so that X-Gen Training compliments what is on offer from the MCA and RYA, X-Gen training will very much be “next generation” ie aimed at those youngsters who are not yet up to South Squad standard but who are capable of starting a race, sailing around a course and using a spinnaker. Because we will be sailing in the winter and the training sessions will be all day, it is really important that these sailors are dressed appropriately (dry suits) and are able to cope with capsizes in cold water.
The dates for X-Gen training sessions 2014/2015 are as follows:
14/15 March (Carsington with other Squads)
The X-Gen Squad will be lead by Charlotte Fitzgerald and will follow a programme which builds on skills learnt in each session. It is therefore really important that before signing up to X-Gen you are sure that you can attend each session.
Further details and application forms will come out in due course.
